| The day before had also been "Davy's" birthday. He was so very happy when we all sang happy birthday to him over and over again. Jen's mom, being up from Alabama and having nothing better to do while her daughter was at work, made Jake a pizza sized chocolate chip cookie with frosting all over it.
He's such a sweet boy...
It was a very long, very hard day. All the actors were being troopers, but everyone was cold, and I number of us were rather cranky. I think most of the crankiness had to do with lunch.
We sent Dave out with orders for lunch. One stop at McDonalds, One at Taco Bell. Unfortunately we had to send him alone because we were understaffed that day. He came back 2 hours later with the food. Everyone was very hungry. And rather cranky. Needless to say we won't be doing that again. Of course it was a special situation, it was an unplanned shooting day and we didn't have the craft service ladies set anything up.
I have one question in regards to boys....
WHAT IS UP WITH STICKS?!?!?!?
I walked out of the cabin after lunch and a bunch of the boys are chasing each other around the building with large sticks. I was calm, I was composed, but I was firm. They all got deer-in-the-headlights looks and dropped the sticks, proceeding to blame it on the nearest available person.
Then I walked into the main building...I was greeted by the sight of smooshed cranberries all over the floors and even some on the walls. I was informed by Andrew Brown that Jordan and Yawo had gotten into an all out war with the cranberries.
...I could have cried...
I love those boys, but... sometimes... sometimes I could strangle them. This was one of those times. I didn't say anything I just turned around and walked out of the building. Apparently the look on my face was enough because they avoided me for the next little while. I just had to keep reminding myself that this was a special weekend, we were understaffed, and that all other times they would be very strictly supervised. I came back an hour later to find that Anthony, Bless his heart, had gotten down on his hands and knees and cleaned up the entire mess with the help of his brother Andrew and Dylan Borger.
It was a VERY long day. We stayed until 10 pm to get a couple final shots with the Nurse. Dusty was so proud of himself for the way he lit it, it was adorable. And then he admitted his goof. He was saying he did such a good job he was going to get a promotion except for that one goof. So I asked what the goof was. Dusty hung his head and kept saying nevermind. Peter had this mischevious glint in his eye and he finally said
"He was trying to assasinate the camera and me. Nearly killed us both."
What had happened was one of the lights wasn't on the proper stand because we didn't have enough stands and it started tipping over it ran into the snow machine. Next in the line up was Peter, and then the Camera. Luckily Peter saw it in time to catch the dominos and sat there pretending to be a superhero until the other guys got it off of him.
But everyone was happy because we were on schedule! Even though we were all far beyond exhausted and very ready to drop. We were certainly not ready to come back in 3 days and film with the girls...The very thought was toture...
| We arrived Thursday night to set up. Guys got there before we did. So I get out of the car to find Peter and Jason scratching their heads looking at the locked cabin door. Both of them stating that they THOUGHT anyone could break into it as they had done it before.
"Why don't you open it the same way then?"
"Well...um...you see...Any guy...should...be able to break in...but um...Doug did it last time...so we're not one hundred percent certain"
But we had faith in them and sure enough we finally got in. By this time in November. IT WAS DANG FREEZING COLD!!! So the ladies stood around suffering because of the guy's sense of "justice" for a while before we took off for the hotel. However we had found out that Doug and his two boys were planning on sleeping in this unheated cabin overnight because they didn't have a hotel. We did have one extra spot in the guys hotel so we kidnapped Anthony (the frailer of the three) and brought him back to the hotel. Meanwhile Doug and Andrew were bedding down in the cold.
Crew call was 7 am. So after breakfast we all trugded over to the camp. Set up some more. Kids showed up and there we were, shooting again. Shot all day long, despite delays of this that and the other thing. We were actaully catching up on schedule. Come 5 pm when we were almost done ahead of time I was SO SO SO happy to be able to go back to the hotel, contemplating crawling into my nice warm bed and dozing of to the sound of Linda and Jen chattering.
And then Jen walked into the cabin and announced "The girl's will be here in a few minutes!"
I had forgotten that we were doing on set rehearsals with the girls that night.
In the words of Ken Davis "A bad word started coming up from the back of my mind, I didn't say that bad word but it was there. What bad word? The one you're thinking will do."
So 18 girls showed up to this very cold camp, to be greeted by VERY tired crew. Peter looked like he was going to drop on the spot. And Andrew getting fed up with modern tools wanted to take a hatchet to the bunks.
Now you will note that at this point and time the guy's sense of justice suddenly dissapeared. They were all too happy to find out that Linda and I were the only crew members nessecary for the rehearsal. So they left as fast as they possibly could to get warm. With the exception of Dear Andrew who stayed and cleaned everything up.
Funny thing about this situation was the girl's had just gotten there. They weren't at all cold. Infact They were very very very excited to be there. VERY excited to be there. We FINALLY got them to leave around 10:15.
One of the decisions we made that night was that regardless of money tightness or anything else, Doug and the boys needed a hotel room. Plain fact. We weren't going to let them freeze again. So Linda got them a hotel praying that God would fund the money.
You would not believe how happy I was to crawl into bed that night...So very happy....
| So...I don't know if the links working or not. And the song is about to abruptly end. (I hate Ryan's server) But the music I just linked onto here is by the guy who is composing the score for Lights Out. His name is Ryan Wotherspoon, somewhere in his late twenties. Worked with Greg Hill (former sound guy) which was how we met him and he is just one of the few people who have agreed to invest their time and talent into God's work through this movie.
Check out his site! Hopefully the MP3 files will work for everyone else. I'll be shot if I ever hear a whole song off of his site.
